The History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day has been celebrated for over a century and is now observed in over 40 countries worldwide.

The holiday was first celebrated in the United States by peace activist Anna Jarvis in 1908, who initiated a campaign to make Mother’s Day a recognized holiday in the US after her mother’s death in 1905.

Although her proposal was continually denied by the US Congress, Anna held a memorial at St Mathews Methodist church in West Virginia to celebrate her late mother.

Anna Jarvis continued to push for the recognition of Mother’s Day in the US, and in 1911, her efforts paid off when all states in the USA chose to observe the holiday.

In 1914, a declaration signed by US President Woodrow Wilson established the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

In Australia, the first Mother’s Day was held in 1924, over a decade after it first began in the US.

Sydney woman Janet Heyden started the Australian tradition of giving gifts to mothers on Mother’s Day after becoming concerned for the lonely, forgotten aged mothers at Newington State Hospital where she regularly visited a friend.

Although the holiday has become commercialized over time, its origins were rooted in honoring mothers and their sacrifices.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated in 168 countries around the world.

Interesting Mother’s Day Facts

Mother’s Day is a special day where we honour and appreciate the love and care that mothers provide. Here are some interesting facts about Mother’s Day:

  • In Australia, there were 6,227,200 women aged 18 and over who had given birth to children in 2012-13.
  • In the United States, Mother’s Day is the most popular type of greeting card sold with approximately 152 million cards purchased and sent each year.
  • The carnation is strongly associated with Mother’s Day. Anna Jarvis, a peace activist, used carnations to symbolize the significance of the day.
  • In 2014, 71% of working mothers in Australia used alternative work arrangements to care for their children aged 0-12 years. Flexible work was used by 39%, part-time work by 38%, and 19% worked at home.
  • Almost 38% of women who ran their own business in 2014 had children under 15 years old, and 18% had a child aged 0-5.

These facts highlight the community’s recognition and respect for mothers and their significant role in the family.

Although the commercialisation of the holiday has led to an increase in gift giving, the stories of appreciation, recognition, and love for mothers remain at the heart of the celebration.

Is Mother’s Day a public holiday in Australia?

Mother’s Day is not an official public holiday in Australia. However, the event is celebrated on a Sunday, so many families can still celebrate it.

Most Australian businesses follow normal Sunday trading hours, but restaurants and venues may charge a supplement due to the popularity of the holiday.

Mother’s Day usually falls outside of school holidays, often in the middle of Term 2 for New South Wales and Victoria.

Therefore, schools remain open on Mother’s Day, and students attend classes as usual.

Why Do Mother’s Day Dates Differ Between Australia and Other Countries?

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates in different countries. In Australia, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, just like in the United States.

However, in the UK, Mother’s Day is observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is over a month before Mother’s Day in Australia.

Other countries have also adapted alternate dates to celebrate Mother’s Day, and these dates are often determined by historical or religious significance.

In total, 168 countries celebrate Mother’s Day as an established tradition, with the holiday most commonly celebrated in March or May.

Just over half of those countries, including Australia, celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.

The idea for this date was first proposed by American writer and women’s rights activist Julia Ward Howe in 1870.

The reason for the variation in dates is due to different cultural and historical traditions that have influenced the celebration of Mother’s Day in different countries.

For example, in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May, as it is the month dedicated to celebrating the Virgin Mary according to Catholicism.

Overall, the varying dates of Mother’s Day reflect the diverse ways in which different countries honor and celebrate motherhood.

These smart home devices are designed to integrate with Amazon Prime services seamlessly and offer many exciting features.

Being an Amazon Prime member, you can experience enhanced functions with your Alexa devices.

For starters, you can enjoy hands-free control of your smart home devices, making it easy to switch on the lights, adjust the thermostat, or even watch your favourite Prime Video shows – all using voice commands.

Your Alexa device can also help with the shopping list by helping you reorder essentials, track orders, and stay updated with the latest deals available exclusively to Amazon Prime members.

Simply ask Alexa for information without having to search through the website.

Apart from these features, Amazon Prime members in Australia can enjoy the Prime Video streaming service, which is compatible with a range of Amazon devices like Fire TV Stick, Echo Show, and more.

With this, you can watch popular movies, TV shows, and Amazon original series on any compatible device or even on your big screen.

Though the array of magazines on offer might not be as extensive as some other services, the titles provided still cover a range of interests you can enjoy.

From fashion to technology, there’s a magazine for everyone.

Please note that Prime Reading differs from Kindle Unlimited, as the latter has a monthly fee of $9.99 and grants access to a much more extensive library of 2 million books, audiobooks, and magazine subscriptions.

However, Prime Reading is included in your Amazon Prime subscription and offers a great selection of titles.

So, if you’re an avid reader or love exploring new genres and authors, Amazon Prime’s access to books, comics and magazines is an excellent added value to your subscription.

Is Walmart in Australia? https://mumsmoney.com/au/is-walmart-in-australia/ Wed, 17 May 2023 00:19:44 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3595 Read more]]> When it comes to shopping for everyday essentials and more, Walmart is a name that many people around the world rely on.

However, if you’re wondering whether there’s a Walmart store in Australia, the answer to that is no.

As of now, Walmart does not operate any stores in the country. Still, it’s worth exploring the reasons behind this absence, as well as any possibilities for Walmart to enter the Australian market.

Is Walmart in Australia Featured Image

Though Walmart operates approximately 10,500 stores in 20 countries, Australia isn’t one of them.

Unlike other international markets, the Australian retail landscape has proven to be quite challenging, thanks to strong competition from local retailers.

In addition, Walmart has faced criticism for its practices in employee pay and business practices, which could also play a role in its decision not to open stores in the country.

The short answer is no. Walmart has not entered the Australian market and has no plans to do so.

This article will explore the various reasons that Walmart has not entered the Australian market and discuss some alternative strategies that they could explore that would allow them to access the Australian market while still retaining some of their competitive advantages.

Walmart’s Presence in Australia

Although Walmart has been hugely popular in the US and around the world, the company does not currently have a presence in Australia.

Walmart’s history of international expansion is primarily focused on a strategy of entering into long-term partnerships with already established businesses.

For example, over the years, Walmart has acquired Asda, a well-known supermarket chain in the UK.

In Mexico and Central America, Walmart cooperates with established supermarket juggernaut Chedraui.

However, despite many acquisitions and partnerships over the years elsewhere in the world, Walmart has yet to announce any plans to enter Australia.

There was talk of an acquisition in 2018 when Sue Mitchel from the Australian Financial Review predicted Walmart would become owners after Wesfarmers packaged up the Coles part of the business to sell as a spin-off, but that never materialised.

It’s possible that Australia will remain off-limits to Walmart for some time to come due to the strength of local retailers.

Benefits of Walmart in Australia

While Walmart has not opened any stores in Australia, there are several potential benefits to having Walmart in Australia, including expanded consumer choice, improved consumer pricing and an increase in job opportunities.

Expanded Consumer Choice

Walmart is renowned for its wide variety of products and its ability to meet consumer demands.

Bringing this vast array of product choices to Australia, would give consumers greater access to items they may not have been able to find before using traditional retail outlets.

This could include more affordable prices for basic necessities and everyday essentials like food, clothing and home goods as well as more options for higher-end items like cars and electronics.

Improved Consumer Pricing

With expanded competition from Walmart entering the Australian market, consumers could expect lower prices for a variety of items due to increased competition between retailers for customer loyalty.

In addition, Walmart could leverage its large purchasing power with suppliers around the world to bring better value products and services at lower prices into the Australian market than what could be found in department stores elsewhere.

Increase in Job Opportunities

As Walmart enters the Australian market, it would create additional job opportunities both within the company itself and with associated companies that support or partner with Walmart to bring their products or services into the local area.

This increased economic activity will help strengthen local communities through increased spending at businesses that may otherwise have seen limited customer traffic due to a lack of competition or customer knowledge of their existence.

Challenges Faced by Walmart in Australia

Is Walmart in Australia

Walmart has encountered a number of hurdles in attempting to enter the Australian market.

One of the main challenges facing Walmart is the already-established supermarket chains. Australia currently has four major supermarket chains– Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA– that have a firm hold on the grocery market.

This creates an uphill battle for Walmart as they attempt to break into an already established market with well-known and trusted brands.

In addition to major supermarkets, Australia also has a large selection of independent grocers and small-scale grocery stores, which often offer lower prices than larger supermarkets.

This makes it difficult for Walmart to compete with these smaller stores as consumers are more likely to shop at independent stores if they can find products at lower prices than larger supermarkets.

Furthermore, Australians possess very loyal brand loyalty, making it even harder for Walmart to penetrate the market successfully as customers are hesitant to switch from their current grocer or store to something new and unfamiliar.

Additionally, high labour costs make it challenging for Walmart to keep up with competitors like discount retailer Aldi.

It’s important to understand that Walmart’s approach to employee pay has been heavily criticised, which may have prevented its expansion.

Final Thoughts: Does Walmart Operate in Australia?

At this time, Walmart does not have a physical store presence in Australia.

This is in keeping with their strategy to avoid countries with already established, powerful retail competitors like Coles and Woolworths.

The Walmart brand is familiar to many Australians due to its many mega stores overseas, its presence in the media and its international online shopping portals such as Jet.com and Sam’s Club.

However, at this time, the Walmart chain has not made any moves toward a physical presence in the Australian market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Walmart in Australia?

No, Walmart is not currently in Australia.

Does Walmart have any plans to enter the Australian market?

No, there are no current plans for Walmart to enter the Australian market.

Does Walmart ship to Australia?

Yes, Walmart does ship to Australia from some of its international websites.

Does BIG W Price Match? https://mumsmoney.com/au/does-big-w-price-match/ Fri, 09 Dec 2022 20:06:46 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3476 Read more]]> Imagine that over half of Australia’s population visits the Big W website monthly. Shoppers visit there to get a wide selection of affordable, high-quality general retail items.

With this immense number, you may pause to wonder, does Big W price match?

Big W price matches with their biggest competitors both online and offline. If you find a lower advertised price on the exact same item somewhere, you’ll likely get a price match as long as the product is in stock at the competing store.

Does BIG W Price Match Featured Image

Big W advertises that it has the most affordable prices throughout Australia. So, customers should feel self-assured that they’re always paying the lowest possible price at Big W if pricing is matched against any competitor’s price.

Let’s take a look at their policy.

How to Get a Price Match at Big W

The mission of Big W is to provide you with “Australia’s Lowest Prices Every day” and to “Sell For Less Every day.”

Big W has streamlined its interactions with its suppliers to obtain the most affordable prices for its selection of goods. Big W then passes on the savings to you by offering daily low prices.

Big W promises to match any lower advertised price for an identical product from another retailer on the spot. This includes JB Hifi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, Bing Lee, Harvey Norman and more.

Show the competitor’s most recent advertisement or ask a staff member to confirm the price.

  • Any item that is identical to the same brand, model number or style, and weight will be priced the same by BIG W.
  • However, Big W will not price-match online merchants. Therefore, if you conduct your study on pricing online, make sure to exclude online companies for price-matching comparison.
  • You must show proof of the cheaper price advertised. You can use online prices for competitors with physical stores or printed advertisements.

What are the Exclusions?

  • Member or club prices
  • Clearance or wholesale items
  • Online sales
  • Soiled and damaged stock
  • End-of-line
  • Ex-demo or similar items
  • Prices that were printed incorrectly.

Does Big W Have a Price Adjustment Policy?

Unfortunately, Big W has not mentioned price adjustment policies on their website. You may, however, contact their customer care or your nearest store for more information and directions.

Does BIG W Have Returns Policies?

A customer and sellertalking to each other_Does BIG W Price Match_Return Policy

Yes. You have 90 days from purchasing at BIG W to change your mind. In addition to the rights set out in Big W’s Faulty Goods Returns Policy, you also have rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

Given that you have the merchandise and evidence of purchase, BIG W will gladly offer you a refund or replacement within 90 days of the purchase if the item isn’t customised, a pre-paid card, digital download, voucher, or clearance item.

It must also not have been worn or used and is still in its original, saleable condition with packaging, all accessories included.

Any BIG W location may handle returns, even those that accept online purchases. Refunds will only be issued in the original payment form shown on your purchase receipt.

Please be aware that any shipping charges for online purchases are not refundable for exchanges.

Big W shops do not accept returns of certain products. Typically, this is done for hygiene reasons, particularly during a pandemic.

Despite Big W’s “change of mind” policy, the following goods cannot be refunded:

  • Tissues, paper towels, and toilet paper.
  • Goods for feminine hygiene and incontinence, painkillers, and cosmetics.
  • Cleaning supplies such as disposable gloves, sprays, and antibacterial wipes.
  • Diapers, wipes for babies, and nappies.
  • Pet food

Big W’s policy instead urges you to share with individuals close to you if you purchased too much or changed your mind about any of these purchases.

Does Big W Price Match Online?

Unfortunately, no. Big W does not match online stores, and it will only match online stores that have physical stores in Australia.

Does Big W Price Match Amazon?

No. Since Amazon has no physical store in Australia, Big W will not match it.

Does Big W Price Match Woolworths?

Yes. BIG W will price match Woolworths’ prices. If the item is identical and not on sale or clearance price, provide Big W with proof of the cheaper price, and they will match it.

Other Ways to Save At Big W

Every year, Big W advertises several sales events. The sales match those of the competitors, making it a fantastic time of year for local consumers.

The Giant Toy Spectacular, a July toy sale, is one of Big W’s largest sales occasions.

Stores usually announce extended hours for this occasion, remaining open long into the evening and offering special deals for specific periods.

Big W App

The Big W app is crucial for time and money savings when shopping at Big W.

By comparing pricing at their favourite retailers with the current prices at Big W locations, the app is designed to assist customers in finding the greatest discounts possible.

The software, accessible for iPhone and Android users, is designed to compare costs while you’re on the move, wherever you’re shopping.

The Big W app is also the first app in Australia that enables customers to lay by more costly products, allowing them to make payments and pick them up after they have finished paying.

Qantas Points

Getting a Woolworth’s Rewards loyalty card is worthwhile if you frequent Big W or other Woolworth’s-managed establishments.

You will earn Qantas points whenever you purchase Woolworths’s groceries, Big W, BWS, or Cellarmasters.

You may redeem Qantas points for frequent flyer miles, use them to purchase presents like fine wine and food, or used to treat yourself to anything from the online Qantas Store.

As you accrue points, you’ll also be able to participate in promotions, access exclusive member-only specials, and learn about upcoming events.

Clearance Section

The clearance department of Big W is another fantastic spot to seek bargains. You may explore a handy area that offers the best deals on books, clothing, technology, and entertainment.

Act quickly before someone else does, and they sell out for good since, for most of these things, this is your last opportunity to get them at a bargain. You may browse their sale products individually or by category of clearance items.

Free Shipping

Big W offers free shipping on all orders over $100 to Australia. You don’t require a Big W promo code; the discount is automatically applied once your basket reaches $100.

21 Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mum https://mumsmoney.com/au/make-money-stay-at-home-mum-australia/ Fri, 11 Nov 2022 16:47:38 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3464 Read more]]> Mom, mum, mama, maman, mammy. No matter your mothering moniker – one thing is universal. We all wonder how to make money as a stay-at-home mum?

I certainly wondered this. Before my kids came along, I worked full-time and earned a healthy salary.

As did my husband. That means we went from two incomes down to one almost instantly.

We planned for this change in our finances (by saving one income and living on the other – best tip ever) and were prepared for what lay ahead.

A mothr and her baby in a room featured image

Our plan was always for me to stay home with the kids until they go to school unless I really wanted to go back to work which was quite likely to happen as I loved working.

Basically, so long as our finances allowed, I was going to remain a stay-at-home mum.

When I was first trying to figure out how to make money as a stay-at-home mum Australia was my home. We then moved to New Zealand to sort out our earthquake-damaged rental property and more than ever I needed to make money from home.

Now my eldest is eight and my youngest is five and we are in the best financial shape of our lives, due to my stay-at-home mum side hustles.

I don’t share this to toot my own horn, but I want you to know that it is truly possible for mums to make good money from home.

21 Ways to Make Money A Stay at Home Mum

Here are some genuine ways to make money from home that works for my family (so they probably will for yours too).

1. Online Surveys

Happy woman looking at her laptop_Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mum

I’ve been taking paid surveys since way before I had kids, and I recommend a tactical approach to online survey sites.

These are the legit survey sites we recommend:

  • Opinion World: Survey giant with frequent opportunities.
  • Octopus Group: Aussie-based, smaller company with the highest payouts.
  • Swagbucks: Worldwide GPT (get paid to) site. Review here.
  • Pureprofile: Fun and regular survey opportunities.

All pay cash (via PayPal or bank deposit) or gift cards.

I recommend checking your survey dashboard daily to see what surveys are available.

I try to complete them immediately as they are not always available when I log in later in the day.

We’ve also written more in-depth guides to our top picks for paid surveys in Australia here.

2. Remote admin work

As I’ve mentioned earlier, I worked in an office before leaving to have my kids.

The skills I learnt in my office job can be applied from anywhere and I was able to convince my boss to give me casual admin work from home.

The jobs weren’t especially frequent, but I received a higher hourly rate and could claim part of my home office as an expense.

I was set up as a sole trader and sent invoices when the work was done. I really loved doing this kind of work and think it’s the perfect side gig for mums.

When looking at ways for stay at home mums to make money you should consider the work you’ve done previously and if it can be done remotely.

Most bosses are much happier to hire an employee they know and trust for remote work so it can be a win-win.

This was my highest paying mum job for years and I earnt between $500-$1000/month.

3. Focus groups

A focus group research panel

Focus groups are another easy way for mums to make extra cash.

The best thing is they are often run in the early evening, so I feel like I get a bit of a night out (is that sad?!?! – haha) while getting paid and eating their food (a lot of the focus groups are catered) and don’t have to worry about babysitting because their dad is home from work.

You can earn anything from $80 to $150 a month from focus groups. I’m registered with almost every panel in my city.

Read more: Australian Focus Groups/Market Research

You’ll also find plenty of opportunities with online focus groups like User Interviews and Respondent running frequent sessions.

4. Mystery Shopping

Mystery shopping is a great way for mums to make some money and shop at the same time.

A mystery shopper (sometimes called a secret shopper), is paid to use shops and services as a customer and report on their experiences.

This might mean you need to go to a specific shop and ask for an item.

You’ll then complete the transaction as normal, and write up a simple report after you’ve left the store.

Sometimes, you can even bring your kids, although I try not to.

The assignments are usually pretty short so I can get someone to look after the kids or just take assignments on preschool days.

Pay ranges from $20-$50 and compensation for products purchased.

5. Blogging

Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mum_blogging

Blogging is how I make the bulk of my income these days. I started a blog back when I was doing remote admin work and making most of my income from that.

As my blog income grew, I scaled back on the admin work and focused on growing my online businesses.

I now run three blogs (this one included) and make between $7 and $15k a month from all my sites.

Blogging is something I’m really passionate about as it’s given me the option of not needing to go back to work, and if my income keeps growing, my husband will be able to give up his job and help me in the business.

I’ve written an in-depth guide to how to make money blogging for beginners as I really think it’s a great way for mums to earn more money – and that money is usually US dollars, so it’s extra sweet if you’re converting to AUD!

6. Share your internet usage

nielsen comp mobile panel

The Nielsen Computer and Mobile Panel is a completely hands off way to boost your budget.

Making money ideas for stay at home mums don’t come any easier than this.

That means you’re not going to earn heaps of money, but you literally only need to install the app and keep it installed to earn.

By installing this app on your mobile or desktop (or both, you actually earn more for multiple registered devices), allowing them to track your internet usage, they can identify trends and predict future internet usage patterns.

Nielsen Computer and Mobile Panel are currently actively recruiting in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

7. Become a virtual assistant

If you’ve ever Googled ‘how to earn money as a stay-at-home mum’, you’ve probably read about working as a virtual assistant.

It’s a growing industry that isn’t slowing down (this is where I would be focusing if I wasn’t blogging).

Working from home as a virtual assistant is a great online job for administrators, personal assistants and executive assistants. All you need is your existing skill base, a computer and an internet connection.

I actually worked in this manner after my son was born, and the gig continued after we left New Zealand to go travelling.

I was earning in Australian dollars (the job was with my former Australian employer) and spending Mexican pesos which let me test out geographic arbitrage – which basically meant that my family and I could live like kings on the 20 hours a week of remote work I was putting in.

If you want to become a VA, check out this monster guide to becoming a virtual assistant.

8. Write articles for blogs and businesses

With the explosion in internet use, the demand for content – blog posts, articles, infographics, reports etc – has boomed.

If you feel comfortable with the written word, working from home as a writer is a perfect gig for a mum. Because writing is usually paid per article, you can fit your projects in between the fits and starts of baby naps and laundry.

I used to get a lot of work through Upwork (and now hire writers from there).

You can read more here: How to Get Your First Writing Online With Upwork

9. Offer services to your neighbours

Think ironing, cleaning, lawn mowing, dog walking, pet care etc.

If your kids are at childcare or school and you have a few hours free each day, but not enough time to commit to a part-time job, this could be a good way to boost your income.

Print up some flyers and do a letterbox drop in your local area. You never know what people might need help with!

10. Start an Etsy Shop

Starting your own Etsy shop requires very little financial input, especially if you limit yourself to only offering digital downloads.

I was fascinated when I heard about this unique way of setting up an online business for ongoing income, so when Trina reached out to me, I begged her to write about how she does it.

You can read more about how Trina, a mum of three, makes passive income on Etsy here.

If you prefer to make physical items, setting up an Etsy shop can really help get your home business off the ground.

We were pretty interested in what actually sells on Etsy, so we compiled a list of the most popular items that you can sell on Etsy to make money. Check out the guide here.

11. Data entry

Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mum

Data entry work consists of repetitive typing and requires extreme accuracy. It’s also frequently available at nights and weekends and can be a great work from home job for stay at home mums.

Data entry jobs can be found in loads of industries. You’ll find hundreds of opportunities on Seek.

12. Find a part-time job out of the home

Retail jobs are a great way to make extra money for stay-at-home mums.

Retail work is usually flexible so it can suit evenings and weekends if you have a partner who is home then.

13. Teach English online

Teaching English online is a great way to make money as a stay-at-home mum.

Until now it’s been hard to find companies that’d hire Aussies, Kiwis, and Brits (because a lot of countries prefer American English speakers), but there are options for non-Americans with the right experience and qualifications.

You can earn up to $21USD per 40-minute lesson and work as much as suits you.

Lessons are mainly at night during the week, so you’ll need to be a night owl for this job, but it might suit you if your kids sleep through the night.

On the weekend lessons run all day long so you could make more money then.

You must be a native English speaker with a bachelor’s degree in any field and some teaching experience.

Check out this blog post for more on how to make money teaching English online.

14. Become a Facebook Marketplace seller

Flipping things on Facebook Marketplace can be a legit source of extra income and a great way to earn money from home. Start with the things you have around the house.

Check what similar items sell for, take decent photographs (this is very important), write an accurate description and get selling.

As time goes by and your experience grows, you’ll get to know what sells best and which items you like working with.

The YouTube video above has some great tips!

15. Rent out your car space

Parkable

If you have a spare car space and live centrally (in Australia or New Zealand) you can make up to $400 month renting your spare car space with Parkable.

The Parkable app makes it easy to add your car space and receive bookings.

Learn more about making money with Parkable here.

16. Rent out your car

If you’re anything like me, your car sits unused in your driveway for long periods of time (now more so as I bike to school with the kids and work from home).

If you can part with your car for some time, you can earn extra money by renting it out.

Uber Carshare (formerly CarNextDoor) allows car owners to earn extra money by renting out their vehicles to screened members.

Car owners can list their vehicles on the platform, and when they are not using them, they can be rented out to others who need a car.

The system includes full insurance coverage to protect the vehicle owner’s interests. The booking and payment processes are handled online, making it convenient for car owners and renters.

Additionally, there is an automated key exchange system, which likely involves a lockbox that allows renters to access the car keys without needing a direct handover from the owner.

According to the information available, cars that are shared occasionally can earn around $300 a month on average, while cars that are shared full-time can bring in between $1,000 to $2,000.

For more details on how to join and start earning by sharing your car, you can visit the official Uber website.

17. Sell pictures of your feet

If you’ve got lovely toes and a stylish foot, selling pictures of your feet can be an easy way to make money as a stay at home parent.

Taking photos of your feet and selling them online via dedicated websites and social media groups is quite a popular side hustle for mums.

So popular, in fact, that we had to write a dedicated guide to how to sell feet pics online.

18. Start a home childcare business

If you have your own kids at home, starting a home-based childcare service may be an option.

In Australia, Family Day Care is well-known and in New Zealand, there are more companies offering support for qualified ECE teachers to start their home childcare business.

There is a lot to consider in terms of compliance, and the qualifications and certifications you’ll need. That said, it’s a legitimate way to earn an income while staying at home with your kids.

19. Try Matched Betting

Aussies can make money with matched betting by taking advantage of the free bets and incentives offered by bookmakers.

Matched betting involves placing bets on all possible outcomes of an event to ensure a profit regardless of the result.

This is typically done by placing a back bet (betting for an outcome to happen) with a bookmaker and a lay bet (betting against the same outcome) at a betting exchange.

20. Become a Professional Organiser

If helping other people get organised sounds like your idea of fun, you could consider becoming a professional organiser.

Jen trains people who are interested in starting a business as an organiser (well actually an organiZer as she’s American) and she wrote a blog post showing how you can get started.

Although it’s not technically a stay-at-home job, you can choose your own hours so it can work around childcare or other family commitments. You can read Jen’s blog post here to find out more.

21. Start a craft-selling business

When I was little, my mum used to drag me and my brother to all the craft fairs in our city where she’d sell butterfly magnets that she made for $1 a pop.

Turns out my mum was a trailblazer. She probably hadn’t even heard the words “side hustle” (I’m pretty sure that term didn’t exist in the mid-nineties), but there she was, making crafts at night after we went to bed and selling them at craft fairs on the weekends.

While butterfly magnets might not be your passion, there are plenty of other craft ideas you can make to earn extra cash.

Think mason jars, headbands, personalised doormats etc. The potential is infinite.

Here is a list of 20 profitable craft ideas to get you started.

Does David Jones Price Match? https://mumsmoney.com/au/does-david-jones-price-match/ Wed, 02 Nov 2022 01:00:15 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3358 Read more]]> David Jones is an upmarket department store. They sell famous designer brands like Burberry, Ralph Lauren, and Hugo Boss, as well as their own label, which is equally popular.

But, with all those premium products in-store, does David Jones price match?

David Jones has a price match policy that they like to refer to as a “promise”. According to the promise, if a competitor has an identical product at a lower price, David Jones will match that price.

Since the company sets the prices and not the individual store branches, all David Jones stores, whether online or offline, offer the Price Promise

Photo showing the entrance area of the David Jones store that is inside a large mall

How to Get a Price Match at David Jones

David Jones has a price match policy with much fewer terms and conditions than many other retailers, making it easy. Here’s what you need to do:

If you wish to request a price match in-store, simply inform a staff member.

If you want to request a price match online, talk to the customer service channel before making your purchase. They will be able to review the request.

If you are shopping after their usual working hours, you can email them with the details of the product and price match at contactus@davidjones.com.au

Conditions

The requirements for price matching at David Jones are less restrictive compared to other stores and retailers.

Should you find a lower price for the same product elsewhere, they will match it with the following conditions:

  • The product must be identical in both David Jones stores or online sites and the competitor’s store.
  • Any product-related offers made by David Jones must also be available from their competitor.
  • The product must be in stock in either their store or website.
  • The competitor must be a store or website in Australia.

Exclusions

They don’t offer price matching for:

  • Independent online retailers
  • Auctions or eBay Buy it now products
  • Fire or liquidation sales
  • Rack, clearance, warehouse outlets, and duty-free stores.
  • The competitors must also not be pure-play or international competitors

Does David Jones Have a Price Adjustment Policy?

Image showing a web page of the David Jones website

Although it is not explicitly stated in their policies, it is possible that David Jones may offer price adjustments at their stores.

This is, of course, subject to the retailer’s own discretion, and they may reject or approve a price adjustment based on different circumstances.

For example, if a product drops in price while your order is still being fulfilled, you can request a price adjustment, and they may comply. You can ask their staff more about this in-store or contact them

Does David Jones Price Match Online?

Yes. Chemist Warehouse is a large registered business in Australia therefore, David Jones accepts price match requests from the store both in-store and online. The same is true for the reverse.

Does David Jones Price Match Amazon?

A pair of hands holding a cellphone showing an Amazon application

Unlikely. Since Amazon is an international store, they are not included in David Jones’ price matching policy.

However, that doesn’t mean that your local David Jones store management won’t accept a price-matching request, and there’s no harm in trying.

Amazon Australia does have an ABN number, so they may price match sometimes.

Although they do not have physical stores, David Jones has no restrictions for online-only stores except if they’re stand-alone single-sale stores.

Does David Jones Price Match Costco?

Yes. Based on their policy, they should give a price match for all Australian Costco locations.

The price matching policy at David Jones doesn’t list any specific acceptable stores. It does, however, have the condition that the price be from an Australian competitor.

Costco does have a number of retail warehouses throughout Australia. Therefore, as long as the store is in Australia, it should accept a price-matching request.

Does David Jones Price Match L’Elegante?

Yes, if you are able to find an identical clothing product in both stores. However, this is highly unlikely because L’Elegante has its own exclusive designers, and their items are only available on its website.

Yet, L’Elegante is a website found in Australia, so it fits the conditions stated in the price promise.

Does Bing Lee Price Match? https://mumsmoney.com/au/does-bing-lee-price-match/ Wed, 02 Nov 2022 00:50:00 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3340 Read more]]> Bing Lee is an old family-owned business that deals in electronics and telecommunication goods and appliances in Australia.

But do those family values include price matching at Bing Lee? Let’s take a look.

Bing Lee has a competitor pricing policy that states that they will match the price of another store as advertised. However, you can only request a price match for sales made by Bing Lee in their retail stores or online. Unfortunately, their price-matching policy has a lot of terms and conditions.

A store that sells appliances with large glass display windows and glass doors with text that reads Bing Lee placed above the entrance

Here are their full policy terms.

How to Get a Price Match at Bing Lee

On the surface, the process of getting a price match at Bing lee is a seemingly simple affair. You can get price matching both online and in their physical stores. Here’s how:

In-Store

If you want a price match in-store,

  • Go with proof that the other store offers a lower price.
  • Request the price match
  • Once they confirm the price is lower, they will match the price

Online

Image of a website page of Bing Lee

If you would like to price match online:

  • Contact their customer service.
  • You can also request a price match by phone number: 1300 609 228

Getting a price match online at Bing Lee can be difficult at times, according to some reviews.

This is because customer service online is not incentivized by individual sales. Most of the time, they may reject the price match request.

It is better to price match in-store since the salesperson will be more likely to accept in order to meet their target sales.

Conditions

There are certain conditions that Bing Lee has in order to request a price match. The terms and conditions for a price are long and extensive, so you must read through them carefully if you want to request one.

They are outlined in their competitor pricing policy as follows:

The conditions for the Competitor are as follows:

  • The business has to be Australian, have an ABN, and pay GST.
  • The competing business must own and operate in at least two physical locations.

The conditions for the product offered by the Competitor are:

  • You must bring the product to attention during the purchase
  • The product must be identical
  • The item must be in stock, available for purchase, and not on back order at the competing store and Bing Lee
  • The product must not be part of bundled or bonus offers
  • For an online store, the item must be available for immediate delivery.

You should also note that:

  • The price to be matched must be for an individual item
  • The price should be after GST, delivery, and handling charges.
  • Bing Lee staff must be able to verify the price.

Exclusions

A hand holding a phone showing an app that reads Buy now pay later

Price matching is not available for:

  • Items purchased through Finance, Afterpay, Zip Money, Zip Pay, or similar services.
  • Products purchased on eBay
  • Products purchased with a coupon or gift voucher
  • If there is an error in the advertised price or product by Bing Lee or the other store.
  • Commercial quantities
  • Fees on delivery, installation, or handling.
  • Item purchased on finance or credit terms.
  • Offers from resellers, classifieds, and online auction pages.
  • Prices from paid membership programs/stores
  • Prices from manufacturers, distributors, or importers
  • Items requiring delivery to or from an area, not inside Australia
  • Display stock, admin sales, liquidation, or clearance lines
  • Time or stock-limited offers
  • Restructuring or amalgamation of sales
  • Grey imports are not included—These are products that are sold by internationally based distributors and are not the local importers for the manufacturer. They can also be called direct import products. They are usually delivered to the customer directly from abroad.
  • Bing Lee also excludes some products from this Policy from time to time, for example, Apple products.

As you can see, the list of terms and conditions looks almost endless. These conditions and exclusions for price matching at Bing Lee make it very hard and time-consuming to get a price matching approval.

Most customers who have made a request have been denied.

Does Bing Lee have a Price Adjustment Policy?

Unfortunately no. According to their customer care service, Bing Lee doesn’t change previous orders. If you make a purchase and the product price drops afterwards, they cannot change it.

If you would like to know if they will price adjust based on sales that they are currently running, then you can try talking to one of their staff at their stores or calling their customer service number.

Does Bing Lee Price Match Online?

No. Bing Lee doesn’t price match online-only products. According to their competitor pricing policy, the price match must be an Australian retailer with at least two physical stores.

They might price match if you purchase online and all the other conditions are met. For example, if it’s an online-only deal at Harvey Norman, but as mentioned before, price matching online is a little difficult.

The best way to check is to talk directly to their staff through their customer service number.

Does Bing Lee Price Match Amazon?

Unfortunately no, Bing Lee doesn’t price match with Amazon. According to their policy, they only match companies with at least two physical outlets.

Also, most of the international sellers on Amazon are not registered businesses in Australia, although Amazon does have an ABN and is registered for Goods and Service Tax.

Does Bing Lee Price Match Harvey Norman?

Yes, as Harvey Norman has (way) more than two physical retail stores in Australia, Bing Lee will offer a price match on their products.

The price match must meet the policy’s requirements, and the items are identical and in stock. So, confirm all the conditions and exclusions before requesting the price match.

Does Bing Lee Price Match Officeworks?

According to their policy, Bing Lee should be able to price match Officeworks since it is a registered Australian business with more than 2 physical stores in Australia.

Make sure the products are identical and meet all the other conditions required for the price match.

Does Bing Lee Price Match The Good Guys?

Yes, they do accept price matching for The Good Guys since it’s a registered business in Australia with 101 stores across six states in the country.

Again, it’s better to visit a physical store than to try to do an online price match.

Does Bunnings Price Match? https://mumsmoney.com/au/does-bunnings-price-match/ Tue, 01 Nov 2022 15:56:28 +0000 https://mumsmoney.com/au/?p=3371 Read more]]> It is a fact that Bunnings’ slogan, “lowest prices are just the beginning,” attracts customers.

Even if a company’s reputation for low prices, knowledgeable staff, and quality are crucial, there is another thing you should consider before purchasing your equipment and supplies: their price match policy.

You’ll be relieved to learn that Bunnings has a price-matching policy. If you’ve ever seen a Bunnings TV ad, you would have heard them say, “If you find a lower price on a stocked item, we’ll beat it by 10%.” Only authorised Australian retailers are subject to the policy, which applies to all identical products.

Photo showing a large building of Bunnins Warehouse withcars in parking area at the front

Bunnings states, that they will undercut competitors’ rates by 10% if you discover them for the identical in-stock item that is available for same-day delivery or pickup and includes GST and delivery fees.

You can read more of their price policies on their website.

How to Get a Price Match at a Bunnings Store

Bunnings will only match rival retailers’ prices in Australia.  You must also provide evidence that another company has an identical product offered for less.

If you show up to a store with appropriate proof, Bunnings will decrease the cost of their items to match the amount indicated by the competitors and discount it by 10%.

You may have complete faith that Bunnings will consistently provide the most competitive prices in the industry.

The policy covers any cheaper goods you discover, both in-store and genuine online retailers.

You must provide a Bunnings staff member with documentation of a competitor’s lower pricing.  You can show a picture or URL of the competitor’s listing price.

The price match policy of Bunnings is very competitive and one of the most lenient ones in terms of its product eligibility criteria.

However, there are still some terms and conditions that need to be met for a successful price match claim:

  • The item offered on the rival’s website must be identical in all senses. In other words, they have to be the same model, brand, colour, and size.
  • Both Bunnings and the rival store must have the product in stock.
  • Commercial quantities, stock liquidations, and marketplace products are not eligible for price matching.
  • Clearance items and items purchased at member-only prices are not eligible for price matching.
  • The item cannot be part of a bundle, be purchased with a voucher, or be available at a discounted rate for members.
  • The product’s GST fees and delivery costs are included in the price match.

If all the rules are followed, Bunnings will beat the competitor’s price.

To complete the price guarantee and make your purchase online, contact Bunnings customer support.

Exceptions

  • The price beat will not be valid if a rival is being liquidated. This is because items at liquidation auctions are frequently offered below cost. Going to the liquidation sale is, therefore, your best option in this situation.
  • Bunnings does not honour its price-matching policy for commercial volumes (you can probably negotiate a better deal directly, anyway).
  • Trade quotes
  • Items requiring delivery to or from an area, not inside Australia
  • Offers from resellers, classifieds, and online auction pages.
  • Prices from manufacturers, distributors, or importers
  • Prices for paid membership programs/stores

Does Bunnings Have a Price Adjustment Policy?

An image of a mock up laptop showing a webpage of the Bunnings website store

Unfortunately, Bunnings’ official website makes no mention of a “price adjustment” or “price reduction” policy.

Their price match policy is all they have.

As a result, there isn’t an established procedure for receiving a partial refund after the purchase.

Price adjustment policies cover price changes made after the sale, while price match is a discount offered before purchase.

You must evaluate pricing before the sale to get the best deal from Bunnings. You may have some luck if you visit a store, but it’s unlikely.

When you’ve already purchased the item and learn that a rival is selling it for less, you can contact Bunnings’s customer service at customersupport@bunnings.com.au for advice.

If they don’t offer a partial refund, browse Bunnings’ return policy to get the best deal possible on the product.

Does Bunnings Price Match Amazon?

Yes, Bunning will match Amazon. If you find an identical product on Amazon for less, the price will be matched or beaten by 10% by Bunnings.

For the price match policy to apply, the items must be exactly the same in terms of scale, brand, colour, etc.

As discussed earlier, if you discover the same item for a lower price on Amazon, you may not be able to return it.

Bunnings documentation doesn’t state anything regarding price adjustments for already-purchased products at Bunnings.

Does Bunnings Price Match Online?

an image showing a hand on a laptop and another hand holding a cellphone showing online store application

Yes, Bunnings matches the pricing offered by online merchants.

To price-match when purchasing online, you have to contact the Bunnings support service and provide evidence that a competitor has the same items listed for a lower price than Bunnings.

If the products are identical to what the competitor marketed them for, customer service will reduce the price by 10%.

If the items aren’t completely comparable, the price match policy won’t be applicable.

Also, the price match won’t be used if the online retailer is not a legitimate store.

Does Bunning Price Match Bing Lee?

Bunnings will price match Bing Lee for comparable items.

To price match Bing Lee products at Bunnings, you must speak with a customer service attendant and provide proof of Bing Lee’s better price.

The stated price will be lowered by 10% less at Bunnings if the employee finds the products match.

Other Ways to Save At Bunnings Stores

Price Beat at Bunnings

Bunnings not only price matches, they also beat competitors’ prices by 10%. So, it’s definitely worth taking competitors’ catalogues into your local store to get the best price possible on your new tools or construction material
