This is my goal too! I’m not there yet but I know kids will be in my future and I will want to take some time off to give them the best start I can. Planning a few years ahead hopefully I’ll have the ash reserves and passive income to allow me to work part time without feeling any financial pressure.
I love the way you so practically break down your income and expenses to make your plan a reality.

Thank you, Tammy! Most of my business income at the time of publishing this post was from providing marketing support and website help to clients, although now I make more from freelance writing and have started to shift away from digital marketing support.

I love your blog. Such a great resource, and your articles are really easy to read. I was wondering what your “business income” was from. Perhaps I should already know this, but what is your business? 🙂
All the best to you and your family!
xo

You rock Em’ Such a great way of thinking and in turn – living!

Yes I think that no matter how much (or little) money one has it’s more the mindset that determines outcome. I’m always a little scared of losing what we’ve worked so hard for but think that’s just physiological. I’ve met loads of ‘poor’ people who live a semi retired lifestyle with nothing who I could argue are actually ‘rich’ if time is the real objective. Also quite a few with large amounts of wealth who are still poor and entrapped

Cheers and look forward to reading updates 🙂

Thanks for your comment, Jezza. Sounds like you have had a wild ride and ended up with a pretty sweet mix of life and work. I think a lot of that comes down to having balls and taking risks when you’re young. Even if you fail, you find out what you’re capable of, and often surprise yourself. Also, I love this: “…so far we’re enjoying life and work, which showed me that we weren’t really looking for retirement but ‘balance’.”
I agree with you about enjoying some of your money. We live in a 1940s bungalow with original kitchen and bathroom, so right now we’re dropping thousands on renovations. BUT.. we plan to stay here for the long-haul, at least until we can move overseas, and then we’ll rent it out so we’re sure it’s money well-spent.

I (as probably many here) have always worked hard and dreamed big about early retirement. Was also a young superstar property investor who was set to be loaded by 30 but also found out the hard way that what goes up also comes down. I was lucky in a way to sell off majority of this stock just prior to this (phew!) and actually (kinda) semi retire (wow for me, I could hardly believe it!)

I was that sick of my jobs and a bad run of complete asshole bosses that I just could not take any more. Sold off strategically and quit my job, age 34. We now had x amount of dollars and partook in a 2 month overseas soul search adventure. It was the best.. we continue to do this because life is so, so precious and we’d hate to fie without really living or too much money left over

We both had no job and no real plan on getting one when we returned home but as it turned out, everything just ‘fell’ into place as – if by magic. I started my dream of creating a landscaping business now I had the time and money and it turned out a complete success. Work 3 days a week and life is pretty good. If we decide to take a trip I hire a Gardener to take on my jobs, pay them half of what my rate is and pocket the difference. There’s no shop front to man or rent to pay, it’s a very low cost business to run and just perfect for the extreme early retiree so thus may be helpful to someone, somewhere reading (?) I’m making at least a couple thousand $’s per week. Hard work but hey, it’s 3 days per week, there’s tougher circumstances out there! But I can honestly say I am definitely blessed and do (finally) love what I do. Life’s too short to hate your work

So, 1.5 years on we’ve bought new cars n stuff, go out for coffee & lunch alot (there’s not much else to do) and sink alotta beers with each other. We’re spending alot more than I first envisioned because of the business’ success. At first I was taking the extreme early retirement route where basically if we were to do this spending was bare minimum in order to preserve what we had. Now, we’re more realistic and know that, hey, we would like to update our 1960’s kitchen and bathroom and have a nice home to live in, rather than a miser’s basement. Our house is above average and we can’t put a price on the rural location, it’s so serene

So, so far we’re enjoying life and work, which showed me that we weren’t really looking for retirement but ‘balance’

I actually get bored doing nothing. . Told myself I’d NEVER but it’s true. While doing ‘nothing’ might sound pretty sweet to some, it’s just not what we were put here to do. We’re here to serve in some form or another, I believe many.

So, all – in – all: semi retirement at such a young age meant becoming wealthier in both income and time, which I had no idea would be the case at the time. It’s a chance to create your dream life that only free time can deliver

I wish everyone the very best in their personal (life) journey

I’m already in my 30s, but I definitely want to create a lifestyle now that I don’t have to work for the rest of my life.
