Something else to be aware of, while European airlines generally will sell you a seat for a child at a discount, us airlines charge you full rates. The final hint I’ve found is the more you travel with kids, the easier it is. While we are not on your scale for travel, the four year old has traveled on a plane 7 or 8 times, 6 of which were international trips and the remainder was Hawaii. 2 of these were work trips, albeit corporate in out case.

Thanks Kasia, it definitely takes some organisation but a lot of the time I wing it!

I’d like to travel with my son when we have some passive income coming in, and when he’s a few years older and can pick up new languages.

Mexico is my absolute favourite place for slow travel Justin. The food is cheap and healthy and as you say accommodation can be got for a bargain. 2 months is a perfect amount of time. If you do go to Merida in the Yucatan, make sure you check out the free zoo, near the Centro. It’s one of the best zoos I’ve ever been too and you can splash out on the kids train for 1 peso per person. Serious cash savings! Just going to check out your latest post now.

We hope to head over there with 3 kids in tow, possibly in the summer of 2016, for a month or two. Getting free or discount tickets for the kids will go a long way in stretching our travel budget.

We’re heading to Mexico for almost 2 months starting in June with the three kids and find that it’s not ridiculously expensive if you plan on traveling slowly. We are finding really nice 2 BR rental houses or apartments in the $400/week range and if we stayed in one place longer, that would drop to $900/month or less. And that’s with all the American creature comforts included.
