Comments on: Why a Paid-off House Is a Key Part of My Financial Plan https://mumsmoney.com/why-a-paid-off-house-is-important/ Make it, Save it, Spend it Wisely Wed, 31 Jan 2024 15:30:55 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.8.3 By: Hal https://mumsmoney.com/why-a-paid-off-house-is-important/#comment-458 Thu, 25 Apr 2019 15:05:56 +0000 http://www.moneycanbuymehappiness.com/?p=5291#comment-458 I paid my house off a few years after my divorce. So, I really didnt get to celebrate it with anyone, and yet I felt the achievement anyway, and I felt true free both financially, and free as a single Male. I love the solitude I get while driving in my car to just get groceries. There is no better feeling than NOT paying a mortgage — that came from earning money from a job you hate as well. So, there you go again… the mortgage basically organized my slave mind, but after killing the mortgage, it organized my liberational mind. There is no better way to be yourself at work or play, than having no debt.

Here in US, people generally keep mortgage for 30 years because they get a tax break from government for owning a home. In reality, if they just add the interest for 30 years, the house prices comes out to be more then 3 times the original price. Great that you will be done with your mortgage in March/April 2018. What a peace of mind? And you have a plan on what to do with the money? That sounds awesome. Surely, you will be hitting early retirement and travelling a lot. I will be implementing your strategy.

Kids only care about being loved and held accountable. They’d be just fine living in a tent or a refrigerator box in my opinion. Houses matter to adults, being loved matters to kids. And yours are well loved by a great mom so they are truly blessed!

My son Bret Aspling gave me the 4000.00 down payment in Sept 2000 on our rent to own home. We rented 18 months before I could get and had a periods of financial insolvency when construction hit bottom and I became disabled. But together myself him and little sister persevered. He died suddenly on May 8 and now I am going to get it ready to sell this fall. After reading several blog articles stating no savings or not much savings in getting a 15 over a 30, I only know in my experience it was a significant savings and my credit was none too good, my rate was 7.5. I paid 37, 000 in interest over the life of the loan of 65,900 with some late fees. The terms had me paying 119,000 in interest over a 30 year period. I may have dropped out of school in the 9th grade but I’m not a complete idiot.

Thanks Javi! Buying a cheaper home to start with makes it much easier to pay back that mortgage!

I think if you can swing being a renter while saving and investing then keep it up. That’s what we’re doing! Your advice on making sure the home is affordable is key in that decision however. I am so excited for you and your family on wanting to travel the world, and it’s so cool to hear that you’re not afraid to be a home owner while being an adventurer. Great Job!
